Practical HorticultureWho Is This Course For?

  • People looking to enter horticultural employment as growers, landscapers, or maintenance contractors.
  • Keen gardeners wishing to improve their knowledge and understanding of plant production, growth and maintenance.

What Will You Learn?

  • The composition and basic properties of soil
  • Composting
  • Modification of soil to improve its suitability for plant growth
  • Fertilisers and their influence on plant growth
  • Identifying pests and diseases
  • Plant structure and functions of different parts
  • Plant propagation from seeds, cuttings, divisions etc
  • Maintaining tools
  • Safety with agrichemicals
  • The botanical system used for naming plants
  • Planting of bedding plants, herbaceous perennials, shrubs and trees
  • Planting maintenance
  • Pruning effectively and safely

Course Duration

The Practical Horticulture course is taught once a week for 30 weeks. After completing this course, students may choose to progress to Landscaping Level 3 or to Organic Horticulture Level 3 or 4. In addition to the tutorials, you will need to complete practical and theory assignments from home.

What Will You Gain?

Completion of the Practical Horticulture course means students will achieve Unit Standards and will be eligible for a Level 2 National Certificate in Horticulture. You will also gain:

  • A broad knowledge of basic horticulture
  • An understanding of the main principles of successful plant growing and propagation
  • Skills you can use in commercial horticulture or in the home garden
  • Ongoing support and friendship 
  • An opportunity to visit other horticultural properties and observe them in operation

Practical Horticulture

What Qualification Can You Gain?
  • Telford Certificate in Practical Horticulture
  • National Certificate Horticulture (Introductory) Level 2

Agriculture New Zealand part-time courses are interactive and fun. Our tutors have specialist knowledge and experience in a wide range of horticultural enterprises and use this knowledge to meet the needs of the students.
